Ways DJs Can Protect Their Hearing

Did you know that listening to loud music in clubs for a long time can damage your hearing? If you’re a DJ that plays at clubs or shows, how do you preserve your hearing? Read on below for some of the best tips on keeping your hearing protected.

How Loud Sounds Can Affect a DJ’s Hearing

Listening to loud sounds continuously will affect your hearing. DJs use headphones to combat this, but how do loud sounds actually affect your hearing? In your ear, there is something called the Cochlea which is a hallow, spiral-shaped bone. This part of the ear plays a big role in why you can hear sound. In the cochlea, sound waves are transduced/ converted into electrical impulses that the brain can read as a frequency of sound.

Loud noises for a long period of time can damage cells and membranes in the cochlea. In the cochlea are tiny, fragile hair cells. These hairs get damaged by the loud sounds; a higher number of damaged hairs can then result in loss of hearing.

Safety Requirements

We know that loud sounds can affect a person’s ability to hear. But how loud does it actually have to be in order to affect a DJ’s hearing? Sound is measured in decibels. To give you a reference, a whisper is around 30 decibels and normal conversation is around 60 decibels. A motorbike engine running is around 95 decibels.  Any noise over 70 decibels for a period of time can start to damage your hearing. The louder the sound, the quicker it takes to damage a DJ’s hearing.

A loud concert is between 110 dB to 120 dB. DJs should not go louder than 120 decibels because 5 mins of sound around 120 decibels can damage your hearing. Anything higher than 120 decibels can immediately damage someone’s hearing.

How to Protect your Hearing for DJing

Professional DJs can hold multiple concerts in a single week. This means DJs are exposed to loud music all the time which can be dangerous for their hearing. DJs use in-ear monitors/ headphones to block out most of the sound. Good DJ headphones like the Pioneer HDJ-2000 block out most of the sound for good sound isolation while also allowing the DJ to preview tracks. The better the sound isolation is, the more you can preserve your hearing.
